One correction though - Bud lost eight friends, not two, in the crash at the story's climax. It was several years before it really hit me that they were meant to be cautionary tales and that was why they so often ended in death for either the protagonist or his friends. The recent discoveries of long-missing people in cars at the bottoms of rivers and lakes have reminded me of the ending of Street Rod.

PaulAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18050357.post-32000254090158652882013-04-05T07:16:40.085-07:002013-04-05T07:16:40.085-07:00I lo-o-oved Crash Club (the only Felson book I eve...I lo-o-oved Crash Club (the only Felson book I ever read). As an adult I can appreciate how deftly he negotiated all the different perspectives--Mike, Mike's dad, Dave, the principal (loved the passage on all the different fads), Donna, even the younger girl (Francine?). Every one of those characters was delineated cleanly and vividly. And Donna was a great character--I had a lot of sympathy for her. Her complicated relationship with Mike, and her keen awareness of high school politics, was fascinating to this junior-high age girl. Man, now I want to go back to my Mom's and grab that book again!Clarahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01525833327080557061noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18050357.post-67984890065079034972013-03-01T06:24:15.902-08:002013-03-01T06:24:15.902-08:00I am Henry's daughter, currently republishing ...I am Henry's daughter, currently republishing some of his books. He would be so pleased to see that people still remember him.
I have to comment on the comment by Jim that girls were second fiddle characters....I always thought my dad liked my brother best!! I tried and tried to get him to write about something I liked...baseball! He did dedicate one book to me, and I was the little sister in Boy Gets Car, but that was it.
I never even read the car books until the last couple of years. I wish I had read them when he was alive, and could have told him how much I enjoyed them.Hollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07213318919911984713noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18050357.post-27535943028861311262011-04-21T13:17:38.250-07:002011-04-21T13:17:38.250-07:00I first read "Hot Rod" at age 14 in 1951...I first read "Hot Rod" at age 14 in 1951. Thereafter, went on to read "Street Rod", and Felsen's other cars-and-kids books. I was fascinated, and always wondered what became of him. I drooled over his descriptions of souped-up jalopies, and shuddered at his descriptions of fatal accidents. Now, in my 70s, I give him credit for any degree of common sense I had developed before I ever put my right foot on a gas pedal. Thanks, Mr. Felsen. Some of it "took". Rest in peace.

SteveStevenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18050357.post-57344018271437491762011-02-25T10:33:42.322-08:002011-02-25T10:33:42.322-08:00Felson was my favorite at 11 too. His books are being reprinted by a small press in Iowa, which I think would make him very happy.
Paul Ingram
Prairie Lights BooksAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
